Ziziphus spina-christi, commonly known as Sidr has been used for thousands of years, across cultures for spiritual healing. In Islam, variations of this majestic plant is commonly used for removing the effects of Sihr (witchcraft/black magic/evil eye) and is used to bathe the deceased.
Sidr Bathing to Remove The Harmful Effects of Sihr
The practice of Sihr began during the time of Prophet Sulayman (may Allah be pleased with him). The Glorious Qur’an teaches us that two angels–Harut and Marut, taught people magic only after informing them of the harms that it can bring. There are those who still chose to practice this dark art and in doing so join forces with the Shayateen and his imps. May Allah, The Exalted keep the believers far away from such evil. Ameen. The affliction of witchcraft can only happen by Allah’s permission. In today’s society it is very prevalent and even common for people, even believers to practice some of its forms. This can spring from evil or ignorance. The best way for a believer to protect themselves from these harms is to increase their knowledge of their religion. Since the aim of this article is to only address Sidr Bathing I will list some study materials on the matter of Sihr and Jinn Possession. These topics will also be addressed in additional posts in shaa Allah.
*Please note that this list is NOT exhaustive. There are so many symptoms that go unnoticed. This is a good reference for some of the most obvious symptoms.
When dealing with someone who is afflicted with Sihr the Sidr Bath is a highly recommended starting point to cure, in shaa Allah. This bath (by Allah’s permission) can remove any harmful effects of the Sihr. Here are the steps to performing the bath below.
How to Perform a Sidr Bath
You will need:
Sidr Leaves or Ground Sidr powder.
Coffee Grinder or Mortar & Pestle (if using Leaves)
1/8th teaspoon measure
Large Pot or Vessel
Large Aluminum Cooking Pan
Clean bath cloth or sponge
If using Sidr Leaves, take seven (7) dried leaves and grind them in a coffee grinder or with a motor in Pestle. If you are using the powdered form of the herb you will be using your 1/8th teaspoon measure to take 7 “scoops” of powder”.
Empty your powdered Sidr into a large pot or vessel.
Add enough clean water to take a bath. (Helpful hint: if taking a bath right away make sure you use warm water. Using a pot that you can leave on the stove and warm the bath tea when needed is especially helpful when the bath will not be performed right away or in extreme cases of Sihr where more than one bath may need to be taken over the course of a few days.
Mix the tea with a spoon.
Once the tea is mixed, the following ayat of Qur’an should be recited over it;
Ayatul Kurtsi 2:255
Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
2. The Ayats of Magic:
“And We inspired to Moses, “Throw your stick,” and behold! It swallowed up straight away all the falsehood which they showed. Thus the truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. So they were defeated there and returned disgraced.”
“And Fir’aun (Pharaoh) said: “Bring me every well-versed sorcerer. And when the sorcerers came, Musa (Moses) said to them: “Cast down what you want to cast!” Then when they had cast down, Musa (Moses) said: “What you have brought is sorcery; Allah will surely make it of no effect. Verily, Allah does not set right the work of Al-Mufsidun (the evil-doers, corrupters). And Allah will establish and make apparent the truth by His Words, however much the Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners) may hate (it).”
“They said; “O Musa (Moses)! Either you throw first or we be the first to throw? Musa (Moses) said: “Nay!, throw you first)! Then behold! their ropes and their sticks, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast. So Musa (Moses) conceived fear in himself. We (Allah) said: “Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand. And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. That which they have made is only a magician’s trick, and the magician will never be successful to whatever amount (of skill) he may attain.”
3. The Last Three Surah’s of the Quran:
“Say (O Muhammad, S.A.W.), “He is Allah, (the) One. Allah-us-Samad [Allah-the Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, (He neither eats nor drinks)]. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none co-equal or comparable to Him.”
“Say: ” I seek refuge with (Allah), the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of the darkening (night) as it comes with its darkness; (or the moon as it sets or goes away), And from the evil of those who practice witchcraft when they blow in the knots, And from the evil of the envier when he envies.”

“Say: “I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind, The King of mankind, the Ilah (God) of mankind, From the evil of the whisperer (devil who whispers evil in the hearts of men) who withdraws (from his whispering in one’s heart after one remembers Allah). Who whispers in the breasts of mankind. Of jinn and men.”
6. The afflicted should take three sips from the tea and use the rest to bathe (Ghusl) with.
Note: Once the Qur’an is recited over this bath tea it is not permissible to allow (the tea) go enter into the drain. Thus the use of the aluminum pan. This pan (or something comparable) should be placed in the tub to collect the tea. It should them be returned to the earth.
Often, those who are afflicted want immediate relief however, it is very important to remember that the affliction of Sihr is a trial and as with all trials, it will require patience. Some Sihr is performed using jinns and if they have entered the body of the afflicted then this bath may cause them severe discomfort. As a consequence, they may cause trouble to the afflicted to get them to abandon this treatment. In essence, symptoms of Sihr may worsen before getting better. If you are afflicted or assisting someone who is please remember Sabr. This is a beautiful opportunity to draw closer to Allah with much remembrance of Him (repentance, Glorification, praise, recitation of Qur’an, and other good righteous deeds which He loves). Don’t despair of the Mercy of Allah. May Allah grant each one of you Shifa. Ameen yaa Rabbi.
