The Story Behind Healing Shea

Divine Ayat began in 2011 under the original name Sister Taliah’s Naturals.

Before Divine Ayat became a wellness brand, I opened a small store in Petersburg, Virginia called The Cultural Village. We carried natural soaps, essential oils, shea butter, fair-trade crafts, clothing, and handmade goods from artisans around the world.

Customers would come into the shop asking about essential oils, herbs, natural body care, and how to better understand the products they were using. Their questions pushed me to study more deeply, formulate more intentionally, and educate my community with care.

Around that time, my mother was going through a season where she needed more support with her body comfort and mobility. I began working with the natural butters and oils I had been studying and created my first batch of what would become Healing Shea.

I gave my mother a jar and did not think much of it.

About a week later, on a Sunday, she called me and said:

“Girl, you’d better sell it!”

That one sentence changed everything.

She started telling her friends. Customers started asking for jars. I began making small batches of about 25 at a time, and they would sell out quickly. Then I opened a kiosk at Fort Lee, where soldiers purchased it so often that I had to increase production to batches of 100 — and those sold out too.

After closing my store and kiosk in 2013, I continued selling Healing Shea at farmers markets. Customers kept coming back. When they could not find me locally, they started ordering through my website.

By 2014, I reached out to Whole Foods Market. Because the product already had strong local demand, they gave me an opportunity as a local vendor in one store. The response was so strong that Healing Shea expanded into three stores, and by 2015, it grew from three stores to more than 42 Whole Foods locations in three months.

In 2021, the brand transitioned from its original name to Divine Ayat.

Divine means “from God.” Ayat means “signs.” Divine Ayat represents the signs Allah placed throughout creation — including herbs, plants, oils, seeds, and natural ingredients — and the belief that wellness can be approached with intention across the spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental domains.

Healing Shea is more than a product. It is the formula that carried this brand from a small shop in Petersburg to farmers markets, military customers, Whole Foods shelves, and now into a new direct-to-consumer chapter.
